MAINE-FARMINGTON
IN NAC TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS
FARMINGTON, ME, April 30, 2008 - Elms College senior first baseman Christina Giampetruzzi (Westfield, MA) clubbed her first collegiate-career home run, but University of Maine-Farmington junior center fielder Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) singled twice, doubled, scored two runs and drove in another to lead the No. 4 Beavers to a 5-2 win over the No. 5 Blazers in the quarterfinal round of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Prescott Field.
With the win, Maine-Farmington (22-7) advances to this weekend's double-elimination championship round to be hosted at top-seeded Husson. The Beavers' victory also matched their record for wins in a season (set in 1999).
Elms College, the two-time defending NAC Tournament champions, were ousted from the tournament and finished 19-15.
Elms grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first when senior shortstop Karyn Palomba (Enfield, CT) scored when a single by Tiffany Williams (Berlin, CT) was bobbled in the outfield.
Maine-Farmington responded with two runs in its half of the first on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) and a RBI double by senior second baseman Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME).
The Beavers tacked on a run on another sacrifice by Goodrow in the third, but the Blazers trimmed the deficit to 3-2 when belted a leadoff homer in the fourth.
Although sophomore left fielder Kim Lastowski (Turners Falls, MA) followed with a double, junior pitcher Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) induced a groundout, bunt popout and strikeout to escape the jam.
Maine-Farmington then came back with a RBI single by Overlock in the fourth and a RBI double by freshman right fielder Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) in the fifth to pad the lead to 5-2 and seal the victory.
Defilipp scattered seven hits, struck out six and issued no walks in a complete-game win.
Elms College senior pitcher Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA) allowed five earned runs on nine hits in the losing effort.
