SOFTBALL TOPS THOMAS IN NAC TOURNAMENT QUATERFINAL
CHICOPEE, MA, May 1, 2007 - Elms College used a five-run sixth inning to break a 2-2 deadlock en route to posting a 7-2 victory over Thomas College in Tuesday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament quarterfinal softball game at Dooley Field.
With the win, Elms College improves to 15-11 and advances to the double-elimination round of the NAC Tournament to play top-seeded Lasell College on Friday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m. Lasell will host the remainder of the tournament.
Thomas is eliminated from post-season play and finishes its season at 11-18 overall.
Thomas jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of RBI singles by sophomore catcher Kristy Clement (Monroe, ME) and junior pitcher Nikki Smith (Bucksport, ME).
Elms College responded with a run in the bottom of the first when junior first baseman Christina Giampetruzzi (Westfield, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in freshman catcher Kim Lastowski (Turners Falls, MA) to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Blazers then knotted the game 2-2 in the bottom of the second
inning when senior shortstop Jen LeDoux (Easthampton,
MA) induced an infield throwing error that allowed her to
score from third.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, LeDoux scored from third on a fielder's choice by Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA). Four batters later, sophomore left fielder Kerrie Bowden (Chicopee, MA) induced a RBI walk with the bases loaded to extend the Blazers' lead to 4-2.
From there, junior second baseman Karyn Palomba (Enfield, CT) and Giampetruzzi connected on bases-loaded RBI singles, and sophomore third baseman Amanda DeSimone (Providence, RI) added a sacrifice fly to lift the Blazers' lead to 7-2.
Tremblay was solid in the win allowing just two runs on three
hits in the complete-game effort.
