CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's soccer team shut out visiting Southern Vermont College, 3-0, in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest at Leary Field Tuesday night. With the win, the Blazers improve to 5-10 on the season, and 3-1 in the NECC, while Southern Vermont holds a 4-12 mark with a 2-3 record in conference.
After a possession battle dominated the opening of the first half, the Blazers cracked the scoreboard in the 27th minute as senior Justin Kassouf (Milford, Conn.) launched a ball from midfield up the sideline to sophomore Jose Ulloa (Stamford, Conn.), who was taken down by a Mountaineer defender in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Elms. On the ensuing attempt, Elms senior C.J. Dabkowski (Bristol, Conn.) placed a low shot past a diving attempt Southern Vermont freshman keeper Dylan Berg (Tampa, Fla.) to stake the Blazers to a 1-0 lead. The Blazers held the 1-0 advantage throughout the remainder of the first half.
In the 70th minute of action, Elms sophomore Babba Jaden (Clarkston, Ga.) received a pass in the Mountaineers box, used some nifty footwork to create space from the defenders and ripped a shot into the far corner of the net, pushing the Blazers ahead 2-0. Less than five minutes later, the Blazers netted an insurance goal as sophomore Michael Campos (Naugatuck, Conn.) played a ball into the box, where senior Kahlil Peters (Hartford, Conn.) delivered a touch pass across the box for a finish from junior Shaquille Robinson (New York, N.Y.) inside the far post, handing Elms the 3-0 lead.
The Blazers dominated the shot column, 17-4, during the contest. Elms freshman goalkeeper AJ Oliviera (Beacon Falls, Conn.) made one save in his first career shutout, while Berg stopped a match-high four shots for Southern Vermont.
The Blazers will look to remain in the win column when they travel to Becker College for an NECC clash Friday at 5:30 p.m. Southern Vermont travels to Newbury in NECC action Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
