MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO CASTLETON STATE 1-0

CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 22, 2006 - Elms College sophomore goalkeeper Phil Joyce (Ashland, NH) turned aside 15 shots, but Castleton State College sophomore forward Gerrit Marino (Waitsfield, VT) netted the only goal of the game to give the Spartans a 1-0 victory in Sunday's North Atlantic Conference men's soccer regular season finale for both teams at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms College drops its third straight decision, falling to 6-9-1 overall, 5-5 in the NAC. Castleton State improves to 8-9-1 overall, 5-4-1 in the NAC.

Marino's goal came unassisted from 30 yards out in the 57th minute for the Spartans, who held a 31-14 shot advantage.


Freshman goalkeeper Mike Anthony (Dartmouth, MA) stopped four shots to help lead the Spartans to their fourth shutout this season.

The Blazers return to action in the NAC Tournament quarterfinals Saturday, October 28, against a team yet to be determined. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
