Anna Maria Slips Past Field Hockey

The Basics:

- The Lead: The Anna Maria College field hockey team snapped a six-game losing streak Thursday evening with a 3-2 non-conference victory over Elms College. Freshman Chayna Bingham-Hendricks (Mashpee, Mass.) broke a 2-2 tie with her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke with 13:37 remaining in the second half.

 

How It Happened:

-In an evenly matched first half, Elms freshman Carissa Ramirez (San Diego, Calif.) scored the only goal in the 11th minute, with an assist from sophomore Madison Gabel (Agawam, Mass.). Elms had a 5-3 advantage in shot in the first 35 minutes.

-Anna Maria tied the game just 1:40 after the break as sophomore Lauren Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season, with an assist from senior Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.)

-The AMCATS took their first lead of the night in the 48th minute when Denver converted a goal from sophomoreAllyson Shaw (Holden, Mass.), Denver's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

-The Blazers came back to tie the score at 2-2 eight minutes later when junior Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) tallied an unassisted marker, her team-high fourth goal of the season.

-Less than a minute later, Bingham-Hendricks was awarded a penalty stroke, and she roofed her shot, giving the goalkeeper no shot at stopping it, and that proved to be the game-winner.

 

Inside the Numbers

-Anna Maria had an 8-3 advantage in shots in the second half, and finished with an 11-8 margin.

-Elms had more penalty corners by a 6-3 count.

-Junior Danielle Huston (Spencer, Mass.) earned the win (2-1) in goal for the AMCATS, making four saves. JuniorJillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) stopped eight shots in the setback for the Blazers.
