CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) made 11 saves and sophomore defender Ashley Reid (Enfield, Conn.) recorded two defensive saves, but Colby-Sawyer College's Rebecca Perley (Sandown, N.H.) struck for the game-winner three minutes into overtime to lift the Chargers to a thrilling, 1-0 victory in Saturday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms moves to 1-4 overall, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-2 on the season.
After playing to a scoreless tie through 70 minutes of regulation, Elms had the first opportunity to win the game when freshman forward Kristina Kopyscinski (Agawam, Mass.) was awarded a penalty stroke 1:36 into the extra stanza. Kopyscinski lifted a well-placed shot to the right side of the net but Colby-Sawyer's goalkeeper Jodi Dumayne (Claremont, N.H.) made a sensational pad save to keep the game at 0-0.
Two minutes later the Chargers were awarded a pair of penalty corners and took advantage of the second as Perley had two shots that were saved by Alvino before she found the back of the net for the game-winner.
Perley and Taylor O'Connor (Sanbornton, N.H.) led the way for Colby-Sawyer's offense, combining for nine of the team's 15 shots on goal and Emma Frampton (Newcastle, N.H.) added a defensive save in the overtime period to preserve the shutout.
Dumayne finished eight saves to earn the victory between the pipes.
Kopyscinski rifled five shots on target and sophomore forward Tatiana Frizzell (Brattleboro, Vt.) added three to lead the offensive efforts for Elms. Reid and sophomore midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) were terrific on defense as Reid made two defensive stops and Lyons one.
Elms travels to Westfield State University on Thursday, Sept. 20 for a non-conference game against the Owls. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Westfield, Mass.
