Laura Sweetman

Elms College senior field hockey player Laura Sweetman (Springfield, Mass.) was selected as this week's female student athlete spotlight.

A special education major at Elms, Sweetman competed in her final season in the field hockey program in 2010.

In two years as a member of the field hockey team, Sweetman was a tremendous presence in the Blazers' defensive backfield, playing in 31 games during the two-year span. During that time, Sweetman provided a defensive save and helped Elms sweep New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival Bay Path College during the 2009 season.

Briefly describe your favorite sports moment (playing or as a fan):

My favorite sports moment was making it to the NECC postseason in 2009.

Who has been your biggest influence in sports and why:

My mom. She has been in education all of my life and it inspired me to take education as my major.

Why did you choose to attend Elms College:

I'm third generation - my grandmother and mother both attended Elms College.

Where is your favorite place to travel and why:

I like traveling to Ireland because I spent a semester abroad in Dublin and it was the best time of my life!

Where is the one place you would like to travel to in the future and why:

I would like to travel to Spain because I've already been and I would like the chance to spend additional time there.

What is your favorite sports book or movie:

My favorite movie is Remember the Titans because it's really uplifting and sends a good message.
