ELMS COLLEGE DOWNED BY NICHOLS, 11-1

Box score

CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 22, 2007 - Elms College junior goalkeeper Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) and freshman goalkeeper Jillian Burrows (Pembroke, MA) combined to record 21 saves, but could not stop Nichols sophomore forward Sara Bailey (Athol, MA) from netting three goals and tallying four assists to lead the Bison to an 11-1 victory over the Blazers in Monday night's non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.

Nichols improved to 12-5 overall and is now just one win shy of tying the program-record for wins in a season. Elms College lost its fourth straight and fell to 2-13.

Nichols opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when Lauren Pettoruto (Windham, NH) blasted a shot through traffic that snuck past Burrows.  Bailey tallied what would stand as the game winning goal in the fourth minute of play to give the Bison an early 2-0 lead.

The Bison added four more goals in the opening half to take a 6-0 lead at intermission.

Freshman forward Denise Perks (Blackstone, MA) scored her team-leading fifth goal of season in the 53rd minute when she gathered a feed from senior midfielder Catherine Thresher (West Suffield, CT) turned and rifled a shot that beat Nichols sophomore goalkeeper MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, MA).

Nichols freshman midfielder MaryKate Frodema (Springfield, MA) scored two second half goals for the Bison, who outshot the Blazers 39-2.

Elms College concludes regular season play with a makeup North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game at Wheelock on Tuesday, October 23.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
