About The Team

Under second-year head coach Nathan Bashaw, the Elms College baseball team earned a berth in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship tournament for the first time since the inaugural season in 2009. The Blazers tallied a 9-9 league record in 2012 and secured the fourth seed in postseason play.

During the regular season, Elms posted series sweeps of Lesley University and 2011 tournament champion Mitchell College. The Blazers also picked up single-game, nine-inning victories over Becker College (9-5), Newbury College (5-4) and Southern Vermont College (8-6).

During the regular season, Elms was led offensively by senior left fielder Donny Morse (Alfred, Maine) who hit .360 with a team-high 40 hits, 10 doubles and 18 RBI. Morse was named Second Team All-NECC, while sophomore right-hander Derek Leal (Charlton, Mass.) picked up three wins and three saves in conference action and finished the season 3-3 overall with four saves and 29 strikeouts and was named Honorable Mention All-NECC.

Morse graduates as the program’s all-time leader in RBI with 85 and is one of five players in the team’s eight-year history to record more than 100 hits as he finished his career with 125. Senior infielder Nico Iavicoli (Hampden, Mass.) finished his four-year collegiate career with 142 hits and 82 RBI which ranks him second in both categories on the Blazers’ all-time lists. Junior outfielder Steve Fisher (West Boylston, Mass.) also picked up his 100th hit during the 2012 season and has now recorded 114 hits.

Sophomore infielder Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) finished regular season play with a .381 batting average in 25 games but suffered a hand injury late in the season that sidelined him 10 games. Pagano drove in 17 runs and connected for 32 hits, scored 19 runs and was 7 for 9 in stolen base attempts, while sophomore shortstop Alex King (Lebanon, Conn.) pounded out 34 hits, tied for the team high in runs batted in with 19, and scored a team-best 27 runs.

Sophomore outfielder Felix Montalvo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) made a late push at the plate hitting .348 with 16 hits, three triples and 12 RBI.

On the mound this season, junior right-hander Ryan Burnette (Chicopee, Mass.) notched a 4-1 record against NECC competition and issued a team-best 22 strikeouts – one ahead of Leal’s 21 punch-outs against league hitters.

In addition to competing in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), the Blazers belong to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
