Baseball Splits with Scranton University in Day One Action of Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. –The Elms College baseball team earned a split with Scranton University during day one action of the Gene Cusic Classic. The Blazers fell 6-5 in game one, before notching a 22-12 victory in game two in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the split Elms starts its season 1-1 overall.

In the opening contest Elms' sophomore shortstop Nolan Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) was 2 for 4 with an RBI, senior catcher Zach Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) was 3 for 3 with a pair of runs driven in.

Junior third baseman Geoff Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, sophomore second baseman Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) was 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored, and junior right fielder Brady Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) was 0 for 3 with two walks and three runs scored.

Elms took a three run lead in the first two innings before Scranton posted four runs in the top of the third frame. The Royals extended the lead to 6-3 with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings before the Blazers closed to within one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

In the second contest, Scranton raced out to an 8-0 lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. Elms plated three runs in the third and two in the fourth to set the score at 8-5, before Scranton rallied for two more in the bottom of the fourth to post a 10-5 lead.

A five-run fifth frame by the Blazers evened the game at 10-10 before Elms exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth stanza to notch an 18-10 advantage. The Royals closed to within six with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the sixth, but the Blazers scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the 22-12 win. 

Elms totaled 24 hits which now stands as the program's single-game record in the category.

Forrest was 2 for 3 with four runs a walk, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run, Medeiros 2 for 6 with three runs scored and freshman catcher Stephen Harrison (Southbury, Conn.) was 1 for 2 with two runs scored off bench.

Senior Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.)  3 for 5 with two runs scored, and two RBI, while Frost was 4 for 5 with a double and five RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.) was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI, freshman Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, Mass.) was 4 for 4, with two runs and two RBI and Wadja finished 3 for 6 with a two-bagger, a run scored and one driven in.

Elms returns to Gene Cusic Classic action on Saturday, March 9 with a double-header against St. Lawrence University at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
