BASEBALL NAILS DOWN NICHOLS, 4-2

Box score

DUDLEY, MA, April 9, 2009 - Elms College freshman third baseman Nico Iavicoli (Hampden, MA) went 2 for 4 and delivered the eventual game-winning RBI in the fourth, and freshman pitcher Zach LeBarron (Bennington, VT) threw six solid innings to lead the Blazers to a 4-2 win at Nichols College in Thursday's non-conference baseball game at Dudley.

Elms College won for the fourth time in six games to improve to 9-10 overall, while Nichols fell to 9-12.

Freshman center fielder Donald Morse (Alfred, ME) hit a RBI sacrifice fly in the second and Iavicoli scored on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a single, as the Blazers led 2-0 through three innings.

In the fourth, sophomore left fielder Bob Reyome (Westfield, MA) hit a leadoff single then advanced to second on an infield error. Two batters later, Iavicoli pounded a RBI double to plate Reyome with the Blazers' third run.

Although Nichols scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, the Blazers added an insurance tally in the top of the ninth.

LeBarron was outstanding, as he allowed just two earned runs, scattered seven hits, struck out two and issued just one walk en route to his first collegiate victory.

Sophomore reliever Craig Hippert (South Barre, MA) threw a scoreless seventh and senior closer Joe Esile (Milford, CT) slammed the door shut, as he held the Bison scoreless over the final two innings to record his third save of the year.
