AT RUSSMATT CENTRAL FLORIDA INVITATIONAL

Box scores

WINTER HAVEN, FL, March 11, 2009 - Elms College freshman third baseman Nicolino Iavicoli (Hampden, MA) went a combined 3 for 3 with two RBI, four runs scored and four RBI to help the Blazers cruise to 13-1 and 9-4 non-conference baseball wins over Emerson at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blazers (2-5) hammered out a combined 26 hits in the doubleheader to end a season-opening, five-game losing streak. Emerson fell to 2-4.

In game one, Elms College led 4-1 through three innings then put the game away behind a five-run, fourth inning that included a two-run triple by senior right fielder Nick Mackowiak (Dudley, MA).

Mackowiak collected a RBI single in the fifth, and the Blazers added three more runs in the sixth, including a RBI single by sophomore centerfielder Bob Reyome (Westfield, MA) and a RBI sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Felix Montalvo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) to account for the final.

Sophomore pitcher Nick Cordeiro (Berkley, MA) was outstanding for the Blazers on the hill, as he allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out six and issuing just two walks.

In the second game, the Blazers trailed 2-1 before plating six runs in the third, including a two-run double by Reyome and a two-run single by sophomore catcher Carm Bonavita (Springfield, MA).

Freshman pitcher Craig Hippert (South Barre, MA) posted his first collegiate victory, as he gave up four runs and six hits, while striking out four over 6.0 innings.

Elms College  returns to action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a doubleheader against SUNY-Cobleskill on Thursday, March 12.
