BASEBALL FALLS TO FITCHBURG STATE, 12-3

Box score

HOLYOKE, MA, April 17, 2008 - Elms College junior right fielder Nick Mackowiak (Dudley, MA) and freshman shortstop Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley, MA) each went 1 for 3, but Fitchburg State College junior left fielder Andrew Sauer (Willington, CT) went 4 for 6 with four RBI to help the Falcons roll to a 12-3 win over the Blazers in Thursday night's non-conference baseball game at MacKenzie Stadium.

Fitchburg State snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 7-16 overall. Elms College fell to 7-13.

The Falcons plated four runs in the second, two more in the fourth, then blew the game open for good with a four-run, fifth inning that included Sauer's two-run triple down the right field line.

Fitchburg State junior Jake Barbarotta (Pittsfield, MA), sophomores Corey Donovan (Lowell, MA), Nick Ryan (Lowell, MA) and freshman Mike Scarmellino (Dover Plains, NY) all combined to limit the Blazers to just one earned run and four hits all night.

Junior pitcher RJ Vassallie (Long Branch, NJ) was the hard-luck loser, as he was victimized by eight Elms College errors. Vassallie allowed 10 hits, but did not yield an earned run.

Elms College sophomore relief pitchers Mike Bieber (Wading River, NY) and James Kosiorek (Springfield, MA) combined to allow just one earned run in 4.1 innings.

Elms College returns to non-conference play with a game at Springfield College on Friday, April 18. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
