BASEBALL FALLS TO WPI, 20-0

HOLYOKE, MA, May 1, 2007 - Elms College freshman designated hitter Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) went 1 for 3, but WPI senior catcher Matt Fiore (Wakefield, MA), junior third baseman Guddy Hagopian (West Brookfield, MA) and freshman second baseman Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) each went 2 for 3 to help WPI post a 20-0 shutout over the Blazers in Tuesday night's non-conference baseball game at MacKenzie Stadium.

WPI kept its hopes for an ECAC Tournament bid alive as it won for the fifth time in the last six games to improve to 18-16 overall. Elms College lost its third straight and fell to 8-20-1.

Swanton and freshman center fielder Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) each had three RBI, while senior designated hitter Dan Mahoney (Troy, NY) belted his fifth home run of the year to pace the Engineers, who pounded out 20 hits in the victory.

WPI plated four runs in both the first and third innings to race out to an 8-0 lead.

WPI then added three more runs in the fourth and six in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

Junior pitcher Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury, MA) allowed no runs on just four hits in 5.0 innings en route to his third win of the year.Elms College concludes its 2007 season when it hosts Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 2. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium.
