BASEBALL FALLS TO ECKERD COLLEGE, 7-4

ST. PETERSBURG, FL., March 19, 2007 - Elms College junior third baseman Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN) and junior designated hitter Joe Bergeron (Granville, MA) each blasted home-runs, but Eckerd College pounded out 11 hits en route to a 7-4 victory over the Blazers in Monday's non-conference baseball game at St. Petersburg.

With the loss, the Blazers fall to 1-3 overall, while Eckerd College improves to 9-11 overall.

Elms College's game against Eckerd College marks the first game played against a Division II opponent in the program's history.

Eckerd scored a pair of runs in the first on a run-scoring triple in the first inning by first baseman Mike Sinicola (Warwick, RI).  

The Blazers battled back in the second to tie the game at 2-2 when Hawes, who went 1 for 3, belted a two-run homer, his second of the year.

The Tritons scored two more runs in the third behind a run-scoring triple off the bat of senior designated hitter Alfredo Cabale (Tampa, FL) to take a 4-2 lead.

Bergeron, who finished 1 for 3, answered with his first homer of the season in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Tritons scored two more runs before the Blazers plated their final run of the game in the eighth.  

Sinicola and Cabale each finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, while freshman shortstop Matt Heller (Bradenton, FL) and senior second baseman Jason Recore (Blackstone, MA) each added two hits in the win. Heller added two RBI, while Recore tallied 1 RBI.

The Blazers return to action at the Port Charlotte Invitational on Tuesday, March 20, to face St. Norbert in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 12:30 p.m.
