A Few Words From Coach Cowles
For most of us, the first day back into golf after the winter
off-season is very exciting and many of us will want to go straight
to the driver or directly back onto the course. Instead of jumping
right back where you left off, you should work slowly in order to
find your rhythm, timing and efficient rotation in the golf swing.
Try a few of these tips:
- When it comes to your swing, check your fundamentals - grip, posture, balance, alignment and ball placement - because they are the basis for your swing. Try the "Feet Together" drill to help you warm up properly and help prevent injuries.
- I stress this at Elms not only at the beginning of the season, but also at the beginning of every practice session. Stand with your feet together and hit your most lofted club in the bag (i.e. lob wedge, sand wedge) for about 15-25 practice shots with half swings. Then, work your way up to your normal stance and start taking larger and faster swings, while continuing the same rhythm, timing and rotation.
- Don't forget about the short game! The short game is equally important and we all know the saying, "Drive for show and putt for dough." The "Compass" drill below is a great way to begin your routine.
Start with short putts to focus on speed, feel and alignment.
Line up balls at the north, south, east and west locations a putter
length away from the cup to set up four separate and unique putts.
Each putt will require you to go through your routine, just as you
would on the course. Make all four putts in a row to complete this
drill. Pressure putting is something we all need to practice!
Hopefully these tips will get you on the right track for a
successful spring and summer of golf!
